5v5 Dribbling Game

A real 5v5 game with one rule — the player on the ball must beat a defender before they're allowed to pass or shoot.

A realistic game with this many players forces real decisions — dribble, pass, or shoot — and the beat-a-defender-first rule keeps taking players on at the center of every one of them.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones, pinnies, balls, and your goals — one for each goal line, or Pugg goals on the end lines.
  2. Build: Build a 30-by-40 grid with a goal on each goal line.
  3. Place: Two teams — 5 field players and a goalkeeper — one defending each end.

One thing to remember: Taking on defenders in a game setting — approach, change of direction, change of pace, and the decision to dribble, pass, or shoot.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

It's 5v5 with one restriction — the attacking player with the ball must first beat a defender before they can pass or shoot.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Divide the players into two teams of 5 field players and a goalkeeper, in pinnies, with a goal on each goal line.

    Coach says

Two teams of five, keepers in. Regular game — with one rule that changes everything.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk the rule — the attacking player with the ball must first beat a defender before they can pass or shoot. That's the whole restriction, and it's there to make attackers dribble and take defenders on.

    Coach says

Before you pass, before you shoot — beat somebody first. Take your defender on.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Let the game run and hold them to the rule. Encourage players to take on defenders, and remind them of the pieces — a good approach, a change of direction, a change of pace. The decisions — dribble, pass, or shoot — are the point.

    Coach says

Take them on! Beat your man — then pick your pass or your shot.

Look for: Attackers going at defenders on purpose — a real approach, a change of direction, and a change of pace before the pass or shot comes.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Play on — the game itself swaps attack and defense with every turnover. For the last stretch, remove all of the restrictions and play a standard 5v5 game.

    Coach says

Rule's off — normal soccer from here!

If it's not working

If the rule jams the game up, lift it and play the standard 5v5 — then bring the restriction back once the game is flowing.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
The restriction makes the dribble the key that unlocks everything else — no pass and no shot until a defender is beaten — so attackers stop avoiding the take-on, inside a realistic setting where the crowd of players keeps the decisions coming.
What are they learning?
Taking on defenders in a game setting — approach, change of direction, change of pace, and the decision to dribble, pass, or shoot.
How can I change it?

Easier: Remove all of the restrictions and play a standard 5v5 game.
