Defensive Speed Course
Defenders race a course — quick feet over the hurdles, sharp cuts around three sticks, then a sprint toward the 6 to win the ball you play in and pass it out clean.
Defensive speed and quickness in front of the goal is fitness work first — fast feet, hard cuts, and a sprint that ends with a real defender's job.
Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive
- Grab: Cones, balls, three practice sticks, and six to eight 6-inch practice hurdles.
- Build: Set the hurdles in a row about 2 yards apart. Five yards past them, place the first stick; 5 more yards at a 45-degree angle away from the goal, the second; and the third 5 yards from there, straight toward the sideline.
- Place: Defenders line up at the right corner of the 18-yard box; you stand near the sideline closest to their line with the balls.

One thing to remember: Defensive speed and quickness in front of the goal — fast feet, quick cuts, sharp turns, and flat-out hustle.
How it runs — the whole game in one sentence
Double-step through the hurdles, cut around the three sticks, sprint for the top of the 6-yard box — then win the ball the coach plays in and pass it back clean.
1Organize the players▾
Coach does
Line the defenders up at the right corner of the 18-yard box, and set yourself near the sideline closest to their line with the balls.
Coach says
One line, right corner of the box. Watch the course once — then it's yours.
2Show the jobs▾
Coach does
Walk the course — quick double steps over each hurdle with each foot landing in every gap; off the last hurdle, sprint to the first stick; a quick 45-degree cut around it toward the second; another 45-degree cut at the second toward the last stick; then a 90-degree cut around the last stick and a sprint toward the top of the 6-yard box.
Coach says
Two quick steps in every gap. Off the last hurdle — sprint, cut, cut, big cut, and go!
3Play▾
Coach does
As each player starts the final sprint toward the 6-yard box, play a ball toward the goal — bouncing or on the ground. The defender must quickly get it under control, keep possession, and distribute it back to you near the sideline. Keep the line rolling.
Coach says
Ball's coming in — win it, calm it, play it back to me!
Look for: The feet through the whole course — fast steps, quick cuts, sharp turns, and real speed to the ball.
4Switch and repeat▾
Coach does
Keep the line cycling through reps. To grow it, add a crosser from the outside with no pressure — the defender handles a crossed ball while traveling toward their own goal — and later send an attacker through the course two hurdles ahead, with the defender fighting to stop them scoring from the cross.
Coach says
Next round — a cross is coming. Deal with it while you're moving toward your own goal.
If it's not working
If feet keep tangling in the hurdles, slide them a step farther apart while the line keeps running — then close them back up as the feet quicken.
Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.
Why are we doing this?
What are they learning?
How can I change it?
Harder: Add a cross from the outside to handle on the move — then an attacker sent through the course two hurdles ahead, racing the defender to score from the cross.
