Pass and Move Around the Circle

Blues crisscross the center circle — pass out to a red, take the return, and cut across through the middle to find another outside player without hitting traffic.

Pass and move is the whole lesson — movement, awareness, accuracy, timing, and first touch, with every surface of the foot getting work.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Pinnies in two colors, a ball for each inside player, and cones if you need to build the circle.
  2. Build: Use the center circle — or build a circle that size with cones.
  3. Place: Six blue players inside the circle with a ball each; six red players spread around the outside.

One thing to remember: Movement, awareness, accuracy, timing, first touch, and passing with all parts of the foot — plus keeping the ball moving and communicating with teammates.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

Each blue passes to an outside red, takes the return, and moves across the circle through the center — avoiding the other players — to play with a different red.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Put six players in blue inside the circle with a ball each, and spread six players in red around the outside.

    Coach says

Blues inside with a ball. Reds, spread around the circle — you'll be playing it right back.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk the loop — an inside player passes to an outside player, receives the ball back, and moves across the circle to pass to another outer player. The path goes through the center of the circle, avoiding the other players. Pass and move, every time.

    Coach says

Pass it out, take it back, then cut across the circle and find a new red. Eyes up — don't crash.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Keep the ball moving at all times and coach the touches — proper weight, accuracy, and timing on each pass, first touch controlled into space, all foot surfaces used, acceleration with power after receiving, and constant awareness and communication.

    Coach says

First touch into space — now accelerate! Talk to each other out there!

Look for: The first touch into space and the burst after it — receivers accelerating with power instead of settling in place.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Change the groups every 5 minutes. For a bigger round, split into three groups of four in different pinnies — four attackers inside the circle, the new group marking them as passive defenders, the remaining four spread around the outside — with the attacking team playing only 2 balls, each ball played in by one attacker and received by a different attacker on the same team.

    Coach says

Switch! New group in the middle — your five minutes starts now.

If it's not working

If the middle turns into a pileup, widen the circle while they play — more room to move through — then bring it back in.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
Crossing the circle after every pass keeps players moving, aware of their surroundings, and communicating — while the give-and-go with the outside players works accuracy, timing, and first touch with all parts of the foot.
What are they learning?
Movement, awareness, accuracy, timing, first touch, and passing with all parts of the foot — plus keeping the ball moving and communicating with teammates.
