1v1 to Goal

One at a time, attackers dribble into a narrow grid, beat the lone defender, exit out the back of the cones, and finish on the keeper.

Goal scoring runs through the last defender — beating them, staying in control of the ball, and finishing with a good shot on goal is this whole drill.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones, a ball for every attacker, and your full-size goal.
  2. Build: Build a 12-by-5 grid just inside the penalty area, and place a cone 7 or 8 yards outside the grid where the attackers start.
  3. Place: One defender in the grid, the goalkeeper in the goal, and everyone else lined up at the starting cone with a ball.

One thing to remember: Beating the last defender with speed, good control with the ball kept close, and finishing with a good shot on goal.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

Each attacker dribbles in, beats the defender — who can only defend inside the grid — exits out the back of the cones, and finishes with a shot on the keeper.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Put one defender in the grid and the goalkeeper in the goal. Line the rest up at the cone 7 or 8 yards outside the grid, every attacker with a ball.

    Coach says

One line, one ball each. The defender lives in that grid — your job is to get through it.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk the jobs — the defender stops attackers from getting through the grid and out the other side, and is restricted to defending only within the grid; the attacker beats the defender and gets a shot on goal, attacking out the back of the cones and never out the sides of the grid.

    Coach says

Through the grid and out the back — not the sides. Beat your defender, then finish it.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Run the line one attacker at a time and hold the bar — good control with the ball kept close, beating the defender with speed, and a good shot on goal to finish.

    Coach says

Keep it close — beat them with speed — and pick your shot!

Look for: Control at speed — the ball staying close through the grid, not kicked past the defender and chased.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Rotate a new defender in every 1 to 2 minutes. For a livelier round, use the variation — an attacker stopped by the defender quickly becomes the defender against the next attacker in line.

    Coach says

New defender in! Next round — get stopped, and you're defending.

If it's not working

If nobody's getting through, slide the grid's side cones wider while the line keeps coming — more room to beat the defender — then bring them back in.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
The grid pins the defender to one narrow strip in front of the goal, so every rep is the real scoring problem — beat the last defender, stay in control, and finish — and the keeper behind it makes the shot count for something.
What are they learning?
Beating the last defender with speed, good control with the ball kept close, and finishing with a good shot on goal.
How can I change it?

Next: Attack vs. Defense — shoot first, then turn and defend the next attacker yourself.
