Attack vs. Defense

Red and Yellow lines take turns dribbling at the penalty box for a quick shot — and the moment you shoot, you turn and defend the next attacker coming the other way.

One drill works both jobs — attacking with a quick shot and defending right after — and run correctly it stays very fast paced, which is exactly why kids love it.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones, two colors of pinnies, a ball for every player, and your full-size goal.
  2. Build: Build a grid as wide as the penalty box and approximately 25 to 30 yards from goal.
  3. Place: A Red group and a Yellow group line up on opposite sides on the cones farthest from the goal — every player with a ball, the goalkeeper in the goal.

One thing to remember: Attacking and defending in one rotation — dribbling with speed, getting the shot off quickly and on target under pressure, and transitioning quickly from offense to defense.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

On your call the first Red player dribbles at the penalty box for a quick shot, the first Yellow attacks next while the shooter defends — and the rotation runs shoot-then-defend all drill.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Put the goalkeeper in the goal. Split the rest into two groups — Red and Yellow — and line them up on opposite sides of the grid on the cones farthest from the goal, every player with a ball.

    Coach says

Two lines, opposite corners, everyone with a ball. Red goes first — on my call.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk the rotation — on your command the first Red player dribbles with speed at the edge of the penalty box and quickly gets a shot off as they approach; immediately after Red shoots, the first Yellow player dribbles in to attack while the Red shooter defends the attempt; after Yellow shoots, they immediately defend the next Red attacker.

    Coach says

Dribble fast, shoot early. The second you shoot, you're the defender — the next attacker is already coming.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Run the rotation on repeat and keep it very fast paced. Hold the attacking bar — quick, controlled attacks, the shot off quickly and on target even under pressure, dribbling with speed — and demand the quick transition from offense to defense.

    Coach says

Speed on the dribble — shot on target! You just shot? Go defend — right now!

Look for: The transition — a shooter turning into a defender the instant the ball leaves their foot, not watching their shot.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Keep the lines cycling — every player attacks from their line and defends right after their own shot, so the rotation itself does the switching all drill.

    Coach says

Back in your line, ball ready — you're up again in a minute!

If it's not working

If shooters keep standing to admire the shot, freeze it and ask — you just shot, so what's your next job? Let them say it, then play on.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
Every turn holds both halves — a fast, controlled attack that ends in a quick shot on target, then an immediate switch to defending the next attacker — and the rotation keeps the whole drill fast paced, which is exactly why kids love it.
What are they learning?
Attacking and defending in one rotation — dribbling with speed, getting the shot off quickly and on target under pressure, and transitioning quickly from offense to defense.
