Quick Transition Game

Three teams of four rotate through a two-goal game — score, snatch the ball from the net, and attack the other way while the beaten team steps off to support and the resting team steps in.

Attacking and defending in one game — an ideal way to teach the basic principles of soccer, and easy to modify to show almost any part of the game.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones, three colors of pinnies, balls, and your two full-size goals.
  2. Build: Build a 35-by-45-yard field with a goal at each end.
  3. Place: Yellow and Blue on the field, the Red support players split two to each goal, and a goalkeeper in each goal.

One thing to remember: Basic attacking and defending principles, the quick transition after a goal, and supporting players moving to good space and angles to properly support the play.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

Score, grab the ball from the net, and attack the other goal — the team you scored on steps off to support, the resting team steps in, and the first team to five goals wins.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Make three teams of four — Blue, Red, and Yellow — and put a goalkeeper in each goal. Yellow starts against Blue; Red waits as the supporting team, two players at each of the two goals, helping whichever color has the ball.

    Coach says

Three teams! Yellow and Blue, you're on. Red — two of you at each goal, and you help whoever's attacking.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk the transition — when Yellow scores on Blue, Yellow quickly retrieves the ball from the goal and attacks the goal on the opposite end line. Blue steps off to become the supporting players while Red steps on to play against Yellow.

    Coach says

Score, grab it out of the net, and go the other way — fast! Get scored on, and you're the helpers now.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Keep the rotation honest — the team that gets scored on always swaps with the supporting team — and coach both sides of the ball, basic defending principles one way and basic attacking principles the other. Encourage playing through the support players to make the game easier.

    Coach says

Use your helpers — they make it easy! And the second that ball's in the net, go!

Look for: The quick transition — the scoring team pulling the ball from the net and attacking the other way without a breath of pause.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Play to five goals — first team there wins. Next game, tighten it — supporting players play one-touch, or attackers must play through a supporter before they can score.

    Coach says

Game on again — this time your helpers get one touch, so pick your passes!

If it's not working

If the support players never touch the ball, add the rule — the attack has to go through a supporting player before a goal counts.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
Every goal flips the field — retrieve, turn, attack the other way while fresh defenders step on — so attacking, defending, and support angles all get exercised in one continuous game that bends easily toward whatever you want to teach.
What are they learning?
Basic attacking and defending principles, the quick transition after a goal, and supporting players moving to good space and angles to properly support the play.
How can I change it?

Harder: Limit the supporting players to one touch, or require the attackers to play through a supporter before they can score.
