Split the Defenders

Four passers around a square keep the ball from a pair inside — and score by splitting a pass clean between the two defenders.

A pass that splits two defenders is possession becoming penetration — it takes a lane spotted early and a ball hit with real pace, on target.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones, pinnies, and a few balls per grid.
  2. Build: Build an 18-by-18-yard square. Build more grids so every group of six has a game.
  3. Place: Two pairs spread around the outside of the square, one pair inside as defenders. Ball starts outside.

One thing to remember: The splitting pass — seeing the lane between two defenders, pace and accuracy, and moving to open space for your partner.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

The four outside keep the ball from the pair inside; a pass that splits the two defenders and reaches a teammate cleanly across the square is a point — and a mistake sends your pair into the middle.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Make three teams of two per grid. Two pairs work together around the outside; one pair defends inside.

    Coach says

Teams of two. Two pairs outside, one pair in the middle.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Show the split — a pass between the two defenders, received cleanly on the far side, scores. A mistake trades that player's pair with the defenders.

    Coach says

Keep it moving, and when the gap opens — split them. Lose it, and you and your partner are in.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Track the splits out loud — every time the defenders get split, they owe one extra win before they come out.

    Coach says

Move for your partner! Pace on the pass — on target!

Look for: Passers shifting to open the splitting lane before hitting it — the gap seen early, the ball played with pace.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Keep the trades honest — mistakes send pairs in, and split defenders pay their extra win. Between rounds, swap the pairs to other grids so everyone works with new partners.

    Coach says

Swap grids — new partners! Defenders, remember: every split costs you an extra win.

If it's not working

If the splits never come, walk the square a few steps bigger on every side — the gap between the defenders grows with it — then bring it back in.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
The split is the whole reward, so passers learn to see the lane between two defenders and hit it with pace — and the debt rule makes every split sting: get split twice, and you owe three wins before you get out of the middle.
What are they learning?
The splitting pass — seeing the lane between two defenders, pace and accuracy, and moving to open space for your partner.
How can I change it?

Easier: Make the square bigger.

Harder: Limit the number of touches per outside player.

Next: 4v2 Rondo — the split becomes the bonus, not the whole game.
