Fun Soccer Dribbling Warm-up
Partners take turns as human obstacles — score by playing your ball through spread legs, flicking it over a lying-down teammate, or knocking it under a bridge — then compare counts.
An ice-breaker warm-up for the start of a season or a camp — light, fun dribbling that gets the kids warmed up and moving.
Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive
- Grab: Cones and one ball for every pair.
- Build: Build a grid about 20 by 20 yards.
- Place: Pairs spread out inside the grid, one ball between them — one partner works while the other rests.

One thing to remember: Close dribbling with the head up — staying aware of the grid, keeping moving, using all parts of the foot, and having fun.
How it runs — the whole game in one sentence
One partner rests in a shape — legs spread, lying on a side, or a bridge — while the other dribbles and scores by playing the ball through, over, or under; count and compare.
1Organize the players▾
Coach does
Pair the players up, one ball per pair, everyone inside the grid. One partner works while the other rests — you'll roll through three exercises.
Coach says
Partners, one ball between you. One works, one rests — resters, you're the obstacle.
2Show the jobs▾
Coach does
Walk exercise one — the resting players stand with their legs spread apart; on your command, each dribbler plays the ball through the legs of ANY standing player, runs around that player, and receives it on the other side. Every set of legs beaten is a point, and partners compare scores after.
Coach says
Resters, feet wide — you're a gate. Dribblers, thread any gate you find, run around, pick it up. Every gate's a point!
3Play▾
Coach does
Roll through the other two. Exercise two — the rester lies on their side; the dribbler dribbles up, stops the ball, flicks it OVER them, and jumps their legs — approaching from the backside ONLY, to avoid injury. Exercise three — the rester crosses their legs and leans forward, hands to the ground like a bridge, stretching the calves; the dribbler knocks the ball under the bridge, between hands and feet, and jumps over the feet. Count every success and compare with your partner.
Coach says
Stop it, flick it over, hop the legs — from behind only! Now under the bridge, over the feet!
Look for: Heads up between obstacles — dribblers aware of what's around them instead of staring down at the ball.
4Switch and repeat▾
Coach does
Swap workers and resters so both partners post a score on every exercise — and keep everyone moving, all parts of the foot on the ball.
Coach says
Switch! Obstacles, you're dribbling now — go beat your partner's number.
If it's not working
An odd number of players? Make one trio — two rest, one works, rotate through — same three games, same scores.
Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.
