Across-Field Warm-Up

Partners jog the width of the field — one tossing the ball, one returning it with volleys, traps, and headers — trading jobs at each sideline.

Warming up and technical skill work at the same time — this is a great one to run at the beginning of every game.

The weekly budget is the part coaches miss. A coach who runs heading twice in a week is not being reckless, they are unaware there is a cumulative cap at all — say the cap, then trust the trained adult: about 30 minutes and 15-20 headers per player per week, everything counted, including games.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: A ball for every pair.
  2. Build: Use the field itself — the drill runs from one sideline to the other.
  3. Place: Player 1 on the sideline; their partner 3 to 5 yards away, facing them, ball in hand.
Show me the setup picturePairs spaced along one sideline — one partner facing the other 3 to 5 yards apart, ball in the facing partner's hands.

One thing to remember: Volleys with the inside of the foot and the instep, thigh and chest traps, headers, good body position behind the ball, and controlled touches before the return.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

One partner jogs backward across the field tossing the ball, the other jogs forward returning it with the called skill — swap jobs at the far sideline and work back.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Divide the team into pairs and give each pair one ball. Player 1 stands on the sideline; their partner faces them 3 to 5 yards away, holding the ball.

    Coach says

Partner up, one ball each. One of you on the line, one facing them a few steps back — ball in your hands.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

The partner with the ball jogs backward across the field, tossing it in; the other jogs forward, receives each toss, and returns it. At the far sideline the jobs reverse and the pair works back. Each trip across works one skill — you call it.

    Coach says

Tosser jogs backward, partner returns every ball. Hit the far line, trade jobs, come back.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Run the trips through the skills — inside-of-the-foot volleys alternating right and left, instep volleys off the shoelaces alternating right and left, thigh traps and return, chest traps and return, and headers back to the thrower, with jumping headers too.

    Coach says

This trip — inside-of-the-foot volleys. Right, then left, every toss!

Look for: Good body position behind the ball, and controlled touches before it goes back to the thrower.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Jobs trade at every sideline, so the pairs run themselves. For a different look, reverse the direction — the thrower jogs forward while the receiver jogs backward.

    Coach says

Flip it — throwers, you jog forward now; receivers, you're going backward.

If it's not working

If the returns keep flying wild, tighten the pairs to the short end of that 3-to-5-yard gap while they jog.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
The skill work rides inside the jog — every toss across the field is another controlled touch, so the body gets a good warm-up while the feet, thighs, chest, and head all get their reps.
What are they learning?
Volleys with the inside of the foot and the instep, thigh and chest traps, headers, good body position behind the ball, and controlled touches before the return.
