Y Passing Drill - Variation 3
One ball works the whole Y — a one-two at the base, a long ball to a top corner, a switch through the center, and a one-two before the dribble home.
One pattern holds two kinds of passing — the quick one-two and the accurate long ball — plus the shoulder checks and timed movement that let each one arrive well.
Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive
- Grab: Four cones and a ball for each Y.
- Build: Set four cones in a Y — the base cone 15 yards from the center cone, and the two top cones 10 yards from the center.
- Place: One player at each cone, extras in line at the base — one ball in play at a time.

One thing to remember: Quick one-two passing, the accuracy and weight of the long ball, checking the shoulder before receiving, timing runs to support teammates, and scanning before the next pass.
How it runs — the whole game in one sentence
A one-two at the base, a long ball to the top left, back inside to the center, a switch out to the top right, a one-two, and a fast dribble home — then the whole thing mirrors.
1Organize the players▾
Coach does
Build the Y, station a player at each cone, and line the extras up at the base. One ball in play at a time.
Coach says
One per cone, line at the base. One ball this time — watch it work the whole Y.

Coach does
Walk the sequence — the base player opens with a one-two off the center; after the return, the base hits a long ball up to the top left; the top left plays inside to the center, who opens up and switches out to the top right; the top right plays a one-two with the center, then dribbles at speed back to the base and feeds the next in line.
Coach says
One-two, then the long one. Corner, play it inside — center, swing it across. One-two, and dribble it home.
3Play▾
Coach does
Run the pattern, then repeat it in the opposite direction, alternating between both sides. Watch the long pass's accuracy and weight, shoulders checked before every reception, crisp and quick passing, movement timed to support the ball, and a scan before playing the next pass.
Coach says
Check your shoulder before it comes! Weight that long ball — make it easy to take.
Look for: The long ball's weight — accurate and paced so the corner player can play on without fighting to control it.
4Switch and repeat▾
Coach does
Rotate by the rule — the base player moves to the center, the center moves to the far corner's spot, and the top left stays — then run the mirror. For a competition, set up multiple groups and race to complete the entire cycle twice.
Coach says
Rotate — base to center, center to the far corner. Other side now, and when I say race, first group through two cycles wins!
If it's not working
If the long ball keeps sailing long or dying short, walk the top cones a few steps closer while they play, then ease them back out as the passes sharpen.

What are they learning?
How can I change it?
Harder: One-touch passing, or stretch the passing distances to challenge the long ball.
