Y Passing Drill - Variation 1

Passes climb a Y of cones — base to center, center out to a top corner — then the corner player dribbles it home fast and the next run climbs the other side.

Receiving with an open body is what lets a player play forward quickly — and the Y makes every rep an open-body reception, a firm pass, and a sprint dribble back.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Four cones and two balls for each Y.
  2. Build: Set four cones in a Y — the base cone 15 yards from the center cone, and the two top cones 10 yards from the center.
  3. Place: One player at each cone, with the extra players and both balls lined up at the base.

One thing to remember: Receiving with an open body, firm and accurate passing, scanning before the ball arrives, dribbling at speed, and the communication and awareness that keep rotations clean.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

Base passes to center, center opens up and feeds a top corner, and the corner player dribbles fast back to the base to hand the next run over — alternating left and right.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Build the Y and station one player at each cone — everyone else lines up at the base with the two balls.

    Coach says

One at each cone — everybody else at the base. Balls start with you.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk one run — the base player passes to the center; the center receives with an open body and plays to the top left; the top-left player dribbles quickly back to the base cone and passes to the next player in line. Everyone rotates by following their pass. The next run goes through the center to the top right instead.

    Coach says

Pass, open up, pass, dribble home. Follow your pass to the next cone — and next time we go right.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Run it with both balls to keep the pace high, alternating the left and right sides. Watch for the open body at the center cone, firm and accurate passes, a scan before every reception, real speed on the return dribble, and players talking so the rotations stay clean.

    Coach says

Open your body — see the whole Y! Firm passes — and sprint that dribble back!

Look for: The open body at the center cone — receiving already half-turned, so the next pass goes forward without a reset.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Keep the runs flowing through every position. For later rounds — reverse the pattern so both feet do the work, add a time constraint to lift the speed, or set up several Y's and race a relay, each player completing the pattern twice.

    Coach says

New round — the pattern runs backward now. Weak side's turn to work!

If it's not working

If the rotation keeps tangling, pause it and ask — where do you go after your pass? Let them say it — you follow it — then restart the runs.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
Every rep is the same game moment on repeat — scan, receive with an open body, pass with pace, then move to your next job — so forward-facing receptions, accurate passing, and quick changes between roles become automatic.
What are they learning?
Receiving with an open body, firm and accurate passing, scanning before the ball arrives, dribbling at speed, and the communication and awareness that keep rotations clean.
How can I change it?

Harder: One-touch passing, longer passing distances, or a passive defender at the center cone pressuring the first touch.
