4-Goal Game

Each team attacks two goals and defends two — score in either of the far ones while covering both of yours, and a fresh ball flies in the moment a goal lands.

Two goals to attack and two to defend teach spatial awareness, teamwork, and quick transitions — switching the point of attack while holding team shape, circulating the ball to keep possession, and balancing the field against the counterattack.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones, pinnies for one team, practice sticks for the four goals, and a supply of balls.
  2. Build: Mark a field around 25 by 35 yards — adjust for your numbers and skill — with two goals near the corners of each long side, four goals in all.
  3. Place: Two teams start in the middle of the field, each with two goals to defend and the opposite two to attack; you hold the ball supply.

One thing to remember: Switching the point of attack, spatial awareness and movement, quick ball circulation to keep possession, balancing the field against counterattacks, defensive communication and positioning across two goals, fast transitions both ways, and creativity in opening a scoring chance.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

Each team attacks the two goals on the far side and defends its own two — a goal counts in either one — and every time a ball dies you play another in fast.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Divide into two teams — 3v3, 4v4, or 5v5 all work well — and give each team two goals to defend and the opposite two to attack. Rotate players frequently so everyone gets attacking and defending time.

    Coach says

Your team owns these two goals — protect them both. You're scoring in either of the far two.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk the scoring — a team can score in either of the two goals it is attacking, which means the defending team has to see both threats and cover both goals. Every ball starts from you.

    Coach says

Either goal counts — defenders, that's two doors to watch. Talk to each other!

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Play the first ball in and keep restarts instant — when a goal is scored, feed another ball right away. Watch for attackers deciding quickly which goal is more open and positioning for it, defenders communicating and positioning to cover both goals and block passing lanes, quick transitions both directions, and creative ways to open up a chance.

    Coach says

Which goal's open? Decide fast! Defenders — cover both, call it out!

Look for: The quick read — attackers checking which goal is more open and shifting the attack there before the defense sets.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Keep rotating players through. For later rounds, limit attackers to two touches, add neutral jokers for a numbers-up attack, grow the game to 6v6 or 7v7 to work positioning in bigger space, or change the goal sizes to move the challenge either way.

    Coach says

New round — two touches, then it's gone! Jokers, you play for whoever has the ball!

If it's not working

If neither team can hold the ball long enough to attack, add a neutral joker who plays for whoever has possession — numbers-up until the attack starts working.

Why are we doing this?
Two targets and two nets per team simulate match conditions with the decisions doubled — attackers must read which goal is more open and switch the point of attack while keeping team shape, defenders must communicate to cover both goals and block passing lanes, and the quick restarts keep the transitions coming.
What are they learning?
Switching the point of attack, spatial awareness and movement, quick ball circulation to keep possession, balancing the field against counterattacks, defensive communication and positioning across two goals, fast transitions both ways, and creativity in opening a scoring chance.
