1v1 Competition

Defenders feed attackers one at a time for a live 1v1 to goal — five minutes attacking, five defending, goals counted, and the best of two games takes it.

1v1 play works both sides at once — attackers learn speed, the quick explosive touch to get away, and shooting at half chances, while defenders learn to close down fast and force the attack aside.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: A cone, pinnies in two colors, a large supply of balls, and your full-size goal.
  2. Build: Set the cone about 25 yards from the goal.
  3. Place: One team starts by the goal with the ball supply — they defend first. The other team lines up at the cone, 25 yards out. Keeper in the goal.
Show me the setup pictureA single cone 25 yards from a full-size goal with the attacking team lined up behind it, the defending team beside the goal with the balls, and the keeper in the goal.

One thing to remember: Attacking with speed, the quick explosion to get away, getting behind the defender, and shooting at half chances — plus defending by Fast, Slow, Outside, Low — approach fast, slow and step back as you close, force the attacker outside, keep a low center of gravity.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

The first defender plays a ball into the first attacker and steps out to defend; beat them and score, then the next pair goes — each team attacks for five minutes, then defends for five.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Split the team into two teams in different pinnies. Put the defending team by the goal with the large ball supply, line the attacking team up at the cone, and put the keeper in the goal.

    Coach says

Two teams — this side defends first, by the goal with the balls. Attackers, line up at the cone.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk one rep — the first defender plays a ball into the first attacker and steps out to defend; the attacker tries to beat the defender and score. Every goal is a point for the attacking team. After a goal, or when the defender wins the ball, the next defender plays into the next attacker and it keeps rolling.

    Coach says

Defender — pass it in hard, then go defend. Attacker — beat them and finish. Goal or lost ball, the next two go.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Run five minutes, then swap so each team attacks for 5 and defends for 5. Attacking — speed at the defender, a quick explosion to get away, getting behind, and a shot at any half chance. Defending — close down fast, slow and step back as you reach the attacker, force them to the weak side, and get low.

    Coach says

Attack with speed — any half chance, shoot it! Defenders — fast, slow, outside, low!

Look for: The change of pace — a quick, explosive touch that gets the attacker away from the defender and behind them.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

After both five-minute turns, total the goals — highest count wins the game. Play two games with a winner named after each; if each team takes one, play another round to break the tie. For a change of look, run it 2v2.

    Coach says

Half! Swap jobs — attackers, you're defending now. Count your goals; game two decides it.

If it's not working

If every attacker just launches it from the cone, add the rule — beat your defender before you shoot. No 25-yard bombs.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
Every rep is a live 1v1 with a goal at stake, so both jobs get honest work — the attacker hunting speed, separation, and a half chance to shoot; the defender closing fast, slowing near the ball, forcing the attack outside, staying low — and the team score makes each duel count.
What are they learning?
Attacking with speed, the quick explosion to get away, getting behind the defender, and shooting at half chances — plus defending by Fast, Slow, Outside, Low — approach fast, slow and step back as you close, force the attacker outside, keep a low center of gravity.
How can I change it?

Harder: Make attackers beat the defender before shooting — no 25-yard bombs — or play it 2v2.
