1v1 Tunnel of Death
One defender guards the middle channel while attackers come one at a time, trying to dribble the tunnel end to end — lose the ball and the middle is yours.
A 1v1 cuts both ways — attackers learn to take advantage of an off-balance defender by attacking with speed, and defenders learn good posture and the quick transition.
Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive
- Grab: Cones, pinnies, and a supply of balls.
- Build: Build a grid about 35 by 15 yards, split into three — a 15-by-15 channel in the middle and a 10-by-15 box on each end.
- Place: Half the team at each end of the tunnel, one player in the middle channel as the defender, one game ball with the first attacker — and spare balls waiting at each end.

One thing to remember: Attacking at speed — going at the defender, the explosive step past, getting behind quickly — and defending by delaying — fast to close, slow near the ball, force the attacker outside and out of the grid, posture low.
How it runs — the whole game in one sentence
One attacker at a time dribbles from their end through the middle channel to the far side — beat the defender and pass to the next attacker; lose the ball and you're the new defender.
1Organize the players▾
Coach does
Split the team into two groups, one on each end of the tunnel. Choose one player to start in the middle channel as the defender. One ball in play — keep the spares handy at each end in case it gets knocked far out.
Coach says
Two groups — one at each end of the tunnel. You're in the middle: the channel is yours to guard.
2Show the jobs▾
Coach does
Walk the jobs — the defender is restricted to the channel, and their responsibility is to stop an attacker from dribbling from one side, through the area, to the other side. If the attacker makes it across, the defender stays in the middle; a successful attacker passes to the next attacker in line. If the defender wins the ball, that attacker becomes the defender and is attacked right away by the next player up.
Coach says
Attackers — dribble through the tunnel and out the far side. Defender — the middle is all yours. Lose the ball out there, and you're the new defender.
3Play▾
Coach does
Keep play quick — players constantly attacking. Push attackers to dribble with speed, go at the defender, hit an explosive step past, and get behind quickly. Push defenders to delay the attacker and force them out of the grid — fast to close, slow near the ball, force them outside, posture low.
Coach says
Go with speed — explode past and get behind! Defender — slow down close, force them outside, get low!
Look for: The explosive step — an attacker changing pace to get past and behind the defender, not dribbling at one speed the whole way through.
4Switch and repeat▾
Coach does
The game does most of the switching — a beaten defender stays, a dispossessed attacker takes the middle. Switch out anyone stuck defending too long, and for another round, run the tunnel 2v2 instead of 1v1.
Coach says
New round — twos! Two attackers coming through, two defenders in the channel.
If it's not working
If someone is stuck defending too much, switch them out — fresh legs in the middle, and the stuck player joins an attacking line.
