2v2 Challenge
Two pairs battle toward a real goal and keeper while fresh pairs wait behind the cones — every won, missed, or scored ball races back to the ball box, and the first team to 10 wins.
2v2 situations attacking the goal, with quick transitions — and fitness demands that can get intense.
Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive
- Grab: Cones, pinnies, every ball you have, and your full-size goal with a keeper.
- Build: Place two cones 20 to 25 yards from the goal, about 30 yards apart. Build a 5-by-5-yard ball box 10 to 15 yards past the cones and put all the balls in it.
- Place: One team lines up behind each cone — don't worry about tidy lines, everyone's involved quickly — with the keeper in the goal.

One thing to remember: Attacking the goal in 2v2 situations — building the attack quickly to off-balance defenders — and quick transition between defense and offense.
How it runs — the whole game in one sentence
Pairs attack the goal 2v2, every won, missed, or scored ball gets run back to the 5-by-5 box to launch the next attack, and the first team to 10 goals wins.
1Organize the players▾
Coach does
Split into two teams, one behind each cone, and put the keeper in the goal. Send two players from each team into the playing area, and assign one pair to attack and one to defend to start.
Coach says
Two out from each team. You two attack, you two defend — everyone else, you're in sooner than you think.

Coach does
Walk the transitions — the attackers go to goal while the defenders try to shut the attack down. Defenders who win the ball dribble it quickly to the box and leave it; two new teammates step out, take a ball, and attack, while the beaten attackers sprint back to their line to free up two new defenders. On a miss or a save, the shooter chases their own ball down and dribbles it back to the box, then joins the end of their line — only once the ball is in the box may their team send the next player out to even it at 2v2, while the other team sprints for the box to catch them a player down. After a goal, the defender closest to the ball digs it out and returns it to the box while the scoring team sprints for the box.
Coach says
Win it? Race it to the box — your teammates attack next. Miss it? You run your own ball back. Everything restarts at the box.
3Play▾
Coach does
Keep score to 10 and keep the box honest — nobody new steps out until the ball is in it. Push attacks built quickly to knock the defender off balance, and instant switching between defense and offense.
Coach says
Build it quick — get them off balance! Lost it? You're defenders NOW — go!
Look for: The transition — players switching between attacking and defending the moment the ball changes hands, with the sprint to match.
4Switch and repeat▾
Coach does
First team to 10 wins. For the next game, limit the players' touches — you pick the number — keep track of offside, or play 3v3 or 4v4.
Coach says
Game to ten! Next one's 3v3 — same rules, more legs.
If it's not working
If the rotations melt into confusion, freeze it and ask what has to happen at the box before anyone new steps out — let them say it, then play on.
Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

What are they learning?
How can I change it?
Harder: Limit touches, keep track of offside, or play 3v3 or 4v4.
