One-Touch Passing Combination with a Dribble; Series 1

Players work a one-touch passing pattern around the grid until the third player runs around the stick, takes the return, and dribbles in and out of the sticks down the middle.

A one-touch passing combination warmup with a light dribble — one-touch passing, receiving, and movement off the ball with touches on the ball.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones or practice sticks for the grid, two or three extra sticks for the middle, and a ball for every player in line.
  2. Build: Build a grid about 20 by 20 with a start cone about 5 yards outside it in the middle, and set two or three practice sticks down the center of the grid.
  3. Place: One player at each of the four corners; everyone else lines up behind the start cone, each with a ball.

One thing to remember: One-touch passing, receiving, and movement off the ball — precise passes to feet, creating space, timing the passes — with a light dribble to finish.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

Player 1 starts the combination from the line, player 3 ends it with a run around the stick and a dribble through the middle sticks — then everyone moves up one job.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Fill the four corners and line the rest up behind the start cone, each with a ball. Number the jobs — player 1 is the front of the line, players 2 and 3 hold the corners the diagram shows.

    Coach says

Four corners filled — everyone else behind the cone with a ball. You're number one; the corners are two and three.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk the pattern once — 1 passes to 2, 2 returns it to 1, 1 plays 3, 3 passes to 2, then 3 runs around the other side of the practice stick and 2 passes to 3. Player 3 receives, dribbles in and out of the sticks in the center, and joins the back of the line — then 1 takes 2's spot and 2 takes 3's.

    Coach says

One, pass and get it back — now play three. Three, give it to two, run your stick, take the pass, and dribble the middle.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Keep the combinations rolling, continuing on the other side of the grid in the same combination and movement. Hold the standard — precise passes to the feet of the receiver, movement off the ball to create space and time the passes, one-touch wherever possible. When a bad pass happens, adjust accordingly and keep the drill going.

    Coach says

One touch! Hit feet — move early and time your run!

Look for: Passes precise and to the feet of the receiving player, with off-ball movement that creates space and times each pass.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Keep everyone cycling through all three jobs on both sides of the grid. For beginners, run the whole pattern in two-touch passes.

    Coach says

Two touches this round — learn the pattern, then we speed it back up.

If it's not working

If the pattern keeps breaking down, slow it to two touches — that lets players get familiar with the pattern and the pace of the passes — then go back to one.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
The pattern asks for one-touch passing, clean receiving, and movement off the ball with touches on the ball at the end — and slowing to two-touch is built in as the way to learn the pattern and pace before speeding back up.
What are they learning?
One-touch passing, receiving, and movement off the ball — precise passes to feet, creating space, timing the passes — with a light dribble to finish.
How can I change it?

Easier: Play in two-touch passes.
