1v1 Speed and Reaction Game

You call a color — one player from each line sprints around it, races through the gate, and battles 1v1 for your tossed ball to either small goal.

A fun addition to any practice — quick reaction and speed, ending with a 1v1 to small goals.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones, colored cones or pinnies to mark the blue and yellow sides, cones or flags for the gate, your small goals, and a supply of balls for yourself.
  2. Build: Build a grid about 15 by 25 — adjust the size to your team's age, size, and skillset — with a small goal on each end and a gate in the center of the sideline across from you.
  3. Place: Both groups line up on your sideline with you and the ball supply; one side is clearly blue, the other clearly yellow.

One thing to remember: Quick reaction and speed — sprinting around the color and through the gate, battling for the ball, and scoring as quickly as possible.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

Call a color — the first player in each line sprints around it and through the far gate, you toss a ball into the center, and it's 1v1 to either goal until the ball is dead.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Split the team into two groups and line both up on your sideline, next to you and your supply of balls.

    Coach says

Two lines, right here with me. First two — you're up.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk one round — on your command both players sprint around the color you called, then sprint through the gate on the opposite side of the field. The moment they're through, you toss a ball into the center, and either player can attack either goal.

    Coach says

I call blue — you sprint around blue, then through that gate. Then the ball's up for grabs — score in either goal.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Run round after round — a goal or a ball out of bounds ends it, a player from each team steps up, and you call another color. Push the sprint around and through the gate, and the battle for the ball.

    Coach says

React! Around and through — now go win that ball!

Look for: The first step — a quick reaction on your call, then a real sprint around the color and through the gate.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Keep the rounds moving through both lines. For later rounds, shrink the field to work closer sprints and footwork, or stretch it for longer sprints and more space on the field.

    Coach says

Cones are moving in — short sprints, quick feet this round!

If it's not working

If every round dies in a scramble, stretch the grid while they play — longer sprints and more space on the field — then bring it back in.

Why are we doing this?
The sprint around the color and through the gate means neither player arrives set — every round opens with a reaction and a race, and the tossed ball turns it straight into a battle to score as quickly as possible.
What are they learning?
Quick reaction and speed — sprinting around the color and through the gate, battling for the ball, and scoring as quickly as possible.
