Soccer Tic-Tac-Toe
A relay race to a giant tic-tac-toe board — sprint, drop your pinnie, sprint back — and the first team to five wins takes it.
The race is the warm-up; the board is the thinking — making good decisions at speed, under the pressure of the other team, is the whole game.
Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive
- Grab: Cones and six pinnies — three yellow, three red.
- Build: Set two cones about 3 yards apart as the starting point, then build a nine-space tic-tac-toe board out of cones about 10 yards away.
- Place: Split the team into two lines at the starting cones. The first three players in one line carry the yellow pinnies; the first three in the other carry the red.

One thing to remember: Thinking quickly under the pressure of the other team, and being strategic about where each pinnie goes — inside a running warm-up.
How it runs — the whole game in one sentence
Race one at a time to the board and drop a pinnie — or move one of yours, once all three are down — then sprint back and slap hands; three in a row wins the round, first team to five wins it all.
1Organize the players▾
Coach does
Two lines at the starting cones. Hand one color of pinnie to the first three racers in each line.
Coach says
Two teams, two lines. First three of you — you're carrying your team's pinnies.
2Show the jobs▾
Coach does
Walk the rules — the first two racers from each team drop their pinnie in any of the nine spaces; the third drops theirs to block or to win; every racer after that carries nothing and moves ONE of their team's pinnies to an open space. A hand slap sends the next racer.
Coach says
Drop it in a space, race back, slap hands. Out of pinnies? Move one of yours.
3Play▾
Coach does
Start both lines on your command and let the rounds run until a team gets three in a row. Play to five wins.
Coach says
Think on the run! Block them — or win it!
Look for: Decisions made at speed — the racer picking their space on the way in instead of standing frozen at the board.
4Switch and repeat▾
Coach does
Reset the board after every win and keep the score going. For later rounds, change the trip — racers run backwards to the board, or work through a speed ladder on the way.
Coach says
Next round — backwards this time!
If it's not working
If a racer freezes at the board, pause it and ask them which space blocks the other team — let them say it, then race on.
Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.
Why are we doing this?
What are they learning?
How can I change it?
Harder: Make the racers run backwards to the board, or set up a speed ladder for each team to work through on the way.
