Two-Goal Soccer Shooting Practice Session
Runners sprint through a chain of grids to meet a serve and shoot on one goal, then cut to the center for a second serve and a shot on the other.
Receiving a ground pass and shooting, then receiving a long ball and shooting on target — two game finishes per turn, with real sprinting between them.
Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive
- Grab: Cones for the grids, plenty of balls for the servers, and your full-size portable goal.
- Build: Set the portable goal approximately 35 to 40 yards from the primary goal, and build four 8-by-8 grids in a square pattern as the diagram shows.
- Place: A keeper in each goal, the two servers on the left side of the goals with the balls, and everyone else split into two lines starting along the sidelines.

One thing to remember: Receiving a ground pass and shooting, then receiving a long ball and shooting on target — movement off the ball, a body squared up and ready, and good shots on goal.
How it runs — the whole game in one sentence
Each runner sprints through their grids to meet a serve and shoot on one goal, then cuts to the center for a second serve and a shot on the other.
1Organize the players▾
Coach does
Put a keeper in each goal and station the two servers on the left side of the goals with the collection of balls. Split everyone else into two lines starting along the sidelines.
Coach says
Keepers in. Servers, left side, balls stacked. Two lines on the sidelines — every turn is two sprints and two shots.

Coach does
Walk line 1's rep — the first player sprints into grid 2 toward grid 1; Server 2 plays a ball into grid 1, and the runner takes a touch if needed and shoots on goal 1; after the shot they sprint through the end of grid 1 toward the center of the area, where Server 1 plays a ball in for a shot on goal 2. Then line 2 mirrors it — grid 4 into grid 3, Server 2's ball, a shot on goal 2, a sprint to the center, and Server 2 plays the second ball for a shot on goal 1.
Coach says
Sprint through your grids — the ball meets you there. Touch if you need it, shoot. Then find the middle — your second ball's already coming.
3Play▾
Coach does
Alternate the lines and keep the sprints honest. Watch the movement off the ball, the body squared up to the goal and ready for the shot, and a good shot on goal.
Coach says
Square up — hips to the goal! Good strike — goals, goals, and more goals!
Look for: The body — squared up to the goal and ready for the shot as the serve arrives.
4Switch and repeat▾
Coach does
Keep the two lines alternating. Switch the servers out after 10 or so serves, and switch which side of the goals the servers start on.
Coach says
New servers! And you're serving from the other side this time.
If it's not working
If the shots keep spraying, freeze it and ask — where should your body be pointed when the serve arrives? Let them answer, then play on.
