Soccer Shooting on the Dribble
Runners sprint grid to grid, take a flighted serve out of the air, turn, and attack their goal on the dribble — finishing with a shot in stride.
Receiving a flighted ball, getting on the dribble quickly, and finishing with a shot on goal — the whole attacking sequence lives in every rep.
Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive
- Grab: Cones for the four grids, a collection of balls for the servers, and your two full-size goals — one of them portable.
- Build: Set the portable full-size goal about 35 to 40 yards from the primary goal, and build four 8-by-8 grids in a square pattern between them, as the diagram shows.
- Place: A keeper in each goal, the two servers on the left side of the goals with the balls, and the remaining players in two lines starting along the sidelines.

One thing to remember: Receiving flighted balls, a head fake and change of pace on the run, a close first touch and quick turn, dribbling with speed toward goal, and shooting in stride.
How it runs — the whole game in one sentence
A runner sprints two grids, receives a flighted ball, turns and dribbles at goal to finish — and the moment the shot is away, the other line launches at the other goal.
1Organize the players▾
Coach does
Put a keeper in each goal and the two servers on the left side of the goals with the ball collection, then split everyone else into two lines starting along the sidelines.
Coach says
Two lines on the sides. Servers — you're the delivery service. Keepers, you're busy today.
2Show the jobs▾
Coach does
Walk the rep — line 1's first player sprints into grid 1, turns, and sprints into grid 2; server 1 plays a flighted ball in just as the runner is about to enter grid 2; the runner receives, turns, dribbles toward goal 1, and shoots. The moment that shot is taken, line 2's first player goes — sprint into grid 3, cut and sprint toward grid 4, take server 2's ball, turn, dribble at goal 2, and finish.
Coach says
Sprint, cut, sprint — the ball's coming in the air. Bring it down, turn, and go score!
3Play▾
Coach does
Keep the two lines alternating on the shot trigger. Watch the run — a head fake and a change of speed and pace before the second grid — then a good close touch, a quick turn, speed on the dribble toward goal, and a shot in stride.
Coach says
Fake, change pace! First touch close — now turn and GO! Shoot in stride!
Look for: A good close first touch and a quick turn — the runner on the dribble almost immediately.
4Switch and repeat▾
Coach does
Switch the side of the goals the servers start from, and switch servers after 10 or so serves.
Coach says
New servers! And the balls come from the other side now — same job, new angle.
If it's not working
If the flighted serves keep dying before the runner, walk the servers a few steps closer while the lines keep moving, then work them back out.
