4v2 Soccer Game to Goal

Two teams trade 4v2 attacks near the penalty area — targets check in, read their pressure, and either turn to score or lay it back for the shot.

Forwards live on one decision — turn and go to goal, or lay it back to the midfield and reset — and this game asks it on every single entry. The focus is score, score, score.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones, pinnies, a supply of balls, and your portable goal.
  2. Build: Build a grid the width of the field — approximately 50 by 25 yards — about 25 yards from the primary goal, and set the portable goal 25 yards from the primary goal.
  3. Place: Split the team into two groups with a goalkeeper in each goal; each team positions itself on either side of the goalposts, one side with the supply of balls.

One thing to remember: Building an attack near the penalty area and getting shots on goal — reading pressure to turn or lay back, movement and positioning after the lay-back, and first-touch shots from the midfielders.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

Two targets check in for the ball and the attack plays 4v2 to goal — turn and shoot or lay it back — and a defender who wins it attacks 2v4 the other way.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Split into two teams and put a keeper in each goal. Each team stands on either side of the goalposts — the attacking side starts with the supply of balls at the goal it defends.

    Coach says

Two teams — that goal is yours, this one's theirs. Keepers in. Balls start back here.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk the start — two target players from the attacking team start at the goal they are attacking, check in, and ask for the ball from their teammates near the defensive area; the other team sends two defenders to close them down. The starting attacker plays into the target's feet and it's 4v2 to goal — the target decides whether to turn and shoot or lay the ball back to the midfielders. If a defender wins it, they attack 2v4 on the other goal.

    Coach says

Targets — check in loud and ask for it. Room to turn? Go score. Tight? Lay it back and reset. Defenders — win it and you're going the other way.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Coach the reads — targets checking in high should read their pressure to decide whether to turn and go or lay it back and reset; watch the movement and positioning after the lay-back, and midfielders taking the first-touch shot when the chance is there.

    Coach says

Feel your defender before it comes! And shoot — you miss every shot you don't take!

Look for: The read — a target who knows their pressure before the ball arrives and chooses right, turning to goal or laying it back to reset.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Alternate so the other team plays its 4v2 going to its own goal, and have the forwards take turns as the target players. For more realistic pressure, send a third defender.

    Coach says

Switch — your ball now. Forwards, you're the targets this round.

If it's not working

If the targets keep turning into trouble, freeze it and ask — what tells you to turn, and what tells you to lay it back? Let them answer, then play on.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
The whole game is built around the forward's decision near the penalty area — turn and score or lay it off and reset — with a live 2v4 counter waiting to punish the wrong choice, so the attack has to be built rather than forced.
What are they learning?
Building an attack near the penalty area and getting shots on goal — reading pressure to turn or lay back, movement and positioning after the lay-back, and first-touch shots from the midfielders.
How can I change it?

Harder: Add a third defender to give more realistic pressure.
