2v2 Battle

Two defenders serve the ball to two attackers, then sprint to shut them down — the attackers pass, move, and pick either goal to attack.

Every round works the attacker's decision — dribble, pass, or shoot — while the defenders learn to quickly close down space.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones, pinnies in two colors, balls, and two small goals.
  2. Build: Build a 40-by-30-yard field — wider than it is long — with a small goal on each end line.
  3. Place: Attackers line up on one sideline with no balls. Defenders line up on the opposite sideline with the balls.
Show me the setup pictureA wide field with a small goal on each end line, one line of players on each sideline, balls with the defenders' line.

One thing to remember: Attacking decisions — dribble, pass, or shoot — and defenders closing down space and working until the ball is won.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

Two defenders pass the ball to two attackers and sprint to close them down; the attackers pass first, then attack either goal.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Split into two groups on opposite sidelines — attackers on one side without balls, defenders on the other side with them.

    Coach says

Attackers on this line. Defenders across from them — you keep the balls.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk one round — two defenders step out and serve the ball to the attackers, then close them down together; the attackers' first move is a pass to their partner, and then they can attack either goal.

    Coach says

Defenders — serve it, then close them down fast. Attackers — pass first, then go at either goal.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Run rounds — each ends on a goal, a ball out of bounds, or a steal, and the next two pairs step out. Encourage overlapping runs from the attackers to throw off the approaching defenders.

    Coach says

Work together — dribble, pass, or shoot!

Look for: Attackers choosing quickly — dribble to beat a defender, pass, or shoot.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

After the lines have run through, switch the roles so every player gets to attack and defend.

    Coach says

Switch sides — attackers, now you defend!

If it's not working

If the attackers can never get going, send out three attackers against two defenders until they can, then go back to twos.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
Each round starts with the defenders sprinting to close down space and the attackers already choosing — dribble, pass, or shoot — with either goal open to them, so both jobs get worked on every serve.
What are they learning?
Attacking decisions — dribble, pass, or shoot — and defenders closing down space and working until the ball is won.
How can I change it?

Easier: Make the field bigger — more space and time for the attackers.

Harder: Limit the attackers' touches to encourage quicker passing and 1-2s.
