1v1 Close-Down Battle

The defender serves the ball, sprints to close down, and battles an attacker who can score on either of two goals.

The defender never knows which goal is coming — so closing down fast, reading the attacker instead of the ball, and picking the right angle are the whole job.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones, pinnies, a good supply of balls, and two small goals — Pugg goals work.
  2. Build: Build a grid 40 yards wide by 30 yards long — wider than it is long — with a small goal on each end line.
  3. Place: Attackers line up on one sideline without balls. Defenders line up on the opposite sideline, each with a ball.
Show me the setup pictureA grid wider than it is long with a small goal on each end line, attackers lined on one sideline without balls, defenders with balls directly across.

One thing to remember: Closing down the attacker quickly, reaction time, speed of recovery, and angles of defense — with feints, change of direction, and change of pace on the attacking side.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

The defender passes to the attacker and sprints to close them down; the attacker can score on either goal, and the rep ends on a goal or a ball out of bounds.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Split the team into two groups — attackers on one sideline with no balls, defenders across from them with every ball.

    Coach says

Attackers this side, defenders that side. Defenders — you have the balls.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk one rep — the defender passes across, then chases the pass to close the attacker down before they get going. The attacker can fake, feint, and change direction toward either goal at any time.

    Coach says

Defenders — your pass starts it, and the second it leaves your foot you're closing down. Attackers — either goal, any time.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Send pairs out one after another. The rep ends when a goal is scored or the ball goes out of bounds, and the next defender and attacker begin. Keep the lines moving.

    Coach says

Serve and go! Close them down — watch the hips, not the ball.

Look for: Defenders reading the attacker's hips — the ones watching the ball get left behind by the first fake.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Switch the lines so every player gets the opportunity to attack and to defend.

    Coach says

Lines swap! Attackers — you're the ones closing down now.

If it's not working

If defenders get beaten the same way every time, stop one rep and ask them what they were watching — the answer is the hips, not the ball — then run it again.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
Two goals mean the defender cannot guess — they have to react to the attacker's movements. The serve-and-chase start builds the habit of closing down while the ball travels, and the attacker's freedom to cut either way at any moment makes reaction time, recovery speed, and defensive angles real rather than rehearsed.
What are they learning?
Closing down the attacker quickly, reaction time, speed of recovery, and angles of defense — with feints, change of direction, and change of pace on the attacking side.
How can I change it?
