1v1 Attacking and Reaction Drill
An attacker and a defender pass across the middle until — on the attacker's cue — the attack breaks for either goal, all feints and bursts against a defender reading every move.
The attacker works quick feints, a change of direction, and a burst of speed — while the defender learns to react fast to an attacker's movements.
Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive
- Grab: Cones, pinnies, balls, and two small goals or Pugg goals.
- Build: Build a grid about 40 yards wide and 30 yards long with a small goal on each end line, and set a cone in each corner about 5 yards from the sideline.
- Place: The defenders group on one sideline; the attackers group on the other with the supply of balls.

One thing to remember: Attacking 1v1 — quick feints, change of direction, and a burst of speed to confuse the defender — and reacting quickly and closing down on defense.
How it runs — the whole game in one sentence
Attacker and defender pass back and forth mid-grid until the attacker takes off at either small goal; when the ball dies, both players round their corner cones and sprint before the next pair goes.
1Organize the players▾
Coach does
Split the team into two groups — defenders on one sideline, attackers on the other sideline with the balls.
Coach says
This side, you're defenders. That side — attackers, balls with you. First two, step up.
2Show the jobs▾
Coach does
Walk one rep — the first attacker passes across to the first defender; the two move toward the center about 5 yards apart, passing back and forth. On the attacker's cue, they take off and attack either of the two small goals — free to fake, feint, and go the other direction at any time — while the defender reacts to every move. Once a goal is scored or the ball goes out, both players run around the cone closest to the goal they were attacking on their side and sprint to the cone near the opposite goal.
Coach says
Pass, pass — then GO whenever you're ready, either goal! Defender, read it. Ball's dead? Round your cone and sprint!
3Play▾
Coach does
Keep the pairs flowing — the next attacker and defender start as soon as the sprint clears. Watch the duel — the attacker using feints, a change of direction, and speed to confuse the defender; the defender reacting quickly and closing down.
Coach says
Sell the fake! And defense — react, close them down!
Look for: The feint actually moving the defender — then the change of direction and burst of speed that makes it count.
4Switch and repeat▾
Coach does
Switch the lines so everyone attacks and defends. For a different start, have the defenders play the ball in and let the attacker attack immediately — the defender must close the attacker down quickly.
Coach says
Switch sides — defenders, you're attacking now! New start: they serve it, you go the second it arrives.
If it's not working
If the attacker can never get free, stretch the grid wider while they play — with more field and two goals to protect, the defender can't cover both.
