Dribbling with Speed

On your command everyone dribbles flat-out for the far buffer zone and takes three touches there — while three ball-hunters try to steal balls or knock them over the end line.

Speed dribbling is two skills in one — running with the ball at full speed, and getting it back under control at the end of the run.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones for the field and a ball for every dribbler — three players start without one.
  2. Build: Mark a 40-yard field with a 5-yard buffer zone on each end.
  3. Place: The three players without balls at the back of the buffer zone; everyone else at the beginning of the buffer zone with a soccer ball each.

One thing to remember: Speed dribbling and getting the ball under control while dribbling with speed — plus shielding, turns, change of pace, change of direction, and fitness.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

On your call the dribblers race to the far buffer zone and take three controlling touches there; lose your ball to the hunters and you join them next round — last dribbler wins.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Send the three players without balls to the back of the buffer zone, and line everyone else up at the beginning of the buffer zone with a ball each.

    Coach says

Three of you are hunters. Everyone else — ball at your feet, on the line, wait for my call.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk the round — on your command, the players with balls dribble at full speed to the other buffer zone and get three touches on the ball inside it. The three without balls try to stop them by stealing the ball or knocking it over the end line. Control it in the far zone with three touches and you go again next round; lose your ball and you join the defenders.

    Coach says

Full speed to the far zone — then three touches to prove it's yours. Lose your ball, and next round you're hunting.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Run round after round — the defenders grow every time a ball is lost — until one player is left. The last player with a ball wins.

    Coach says

Go! Shield it, cut, change speed — get to that zone!

Look for: The escapes — shielding, turns, changes of pace, and changes of direction that keep the ball alive at full speed.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Play it again from the top. With 15 players you can run the game 5 times — each player gets one round starting as a defender and four chances starting as an attacker.

    Coach says

New game! New hunters — everybody else, balls back on the line.

If it's not working

If the dribblers get swallowed the moment they start, widen the field while they play — more room to swerve — then bring it back in.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
The full-speed run and the three required touches at the end are the two halves of speed dribbling in one rep — and the hunters turn every run into shielding, turns, and changes of pace and direction, with every lost ball making the next round harder. It's an excellent fitness workout besides.
What are they learning?
Speed dribbling and getting the ball under control while dribbling with speed — plus shielding, turns, change of pace, change of direction, and fitness.
