Shooting Agility Drill
Each shooter trades passes with the coach down a cone channel, backpedals, then reacts to a lay-off played to either side — sprint around the cones and shoot on stride.
Agility and check-runs after the pass are the skill — a shooter who reads the lay-off's direction quickly arrives on stride for a solid strike.
Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive
- Grab: Your cones — 10 to 12 for the channel and 4 or 5 more for the angled line — plus balls and the full-size goal.
- Build: Build a cone channel ending near the penalty area, and at the top of the channel set the extra cones in a line angled toward the corner flag.
- Place: Take your spot at the goal end of the channel, a couple yards inside the penalty area; the shooters line up with a ball 4 to 5 yards back from the top of the channel.

One thing to remember: Agility and check-runs after the pass — quick movement after every pass, a quick reaction to the pass and its direction, a solid strike, and a follow-through toward goal.
How it runs — the whole game in one sentence
The shooter passes into the coach and trades passes down the channel, backpedals, then reacts to a lay-off played to either side — around the end of the cones and a shot on stride.
1Organize the players▾
Coach does
Line the shooters up with a ball, 4 to 5 yards back from the top of the channel. Take your place — or put a target player — at the goal end of the channel, a couple yards inside the penalty area.
Coach says
Line up at the top of the channel, ball each. I'm at the other end — everything runs through me.

Coach does
Walk the sequence — the shooter passes through the channel to you, then check-runs down the channel toward you; you return the pass to the advancing attacker inside the channel; they play it back and quickly backpedal toward the end where they began; then you lay a ball off to either side, and the shooter reacts to its direction, sprints around the end of the cones, and shoots on stride.
Coach says
Pass to me, then come get the return. Give it back, backpedal — and when I lay it off, read it, sprint around the cones, and hit it on the run.

Coach does
Keep every rep at full speed — quick movement after each pass, a quick reaction to the pass and its direction, a solid strike, and a follow-through toward goal.
Coach says
Full speed! React — go, go! Strike it and follow through!
Look for: The reaction — the shooter reads the lay-off's direction instantly and arrives on stride for a solid strike.
4Switch and repeat▾
Coach does
Keep the line cycling through. In later rounds, create different shots — bounce, spin, or stop the ball as you lay it off.
Coach says
Next ball has some spin on it — deal with whatever comes!
If it's not working
If the surprise lay-off keeps losing them, simplify it — announce the side by pointing as you lay the ball off.
Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.
Why are we doing this?
What are they learning?
How can I change it?
Easier: Announce the side you are laying the ball off by pointing to it.
