1v1 Diamond Shooting Drill

A passing combination flows around a diamond of cones and ends in a 1v1 to goal — score and the keeper stays, miss and the shooter takes the gloves.

The combination trains passing with quick movement off the ball, the finish is a real one-v-one to goal — and players love the fun, competitive twist that a miss makes you the goalkeeper.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones for the diamond and a supply of balls.
  2. Build: Set the cones in a diamond about 20 yards from goal, each cone about 12 yards apart — adjust the size for your players' age and skill.
  3. Place: One player at cones 2, 3, and 4, the rest in a line behind cone 1 with the balls near, and one player in the goal — not necessarily your goalkeeper, because that changes.

One thing to remember: A passing combination with quick movement off the ball, good defensive posture and positioning, and beating a defender with speed to get a shot on target.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

The ball works around the diamond — 1 to 2 to 3 to 4, each passer moving on — then player 4 takes on player 2 in a 1v1 to goal, and a miss makes the shooter the new keeper.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Post one player at cones 2, 3, and 4 and line the rest up behind cone 1 with the ball supply. Put one player in the goal to start — not necessarily your goalkeeper, since that job changes hands.

    Coach says

One of you at each cone — everyone else lines up here with the balls. Somebody brave in goal to start. That job changes hands.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk the combination — player 1 passes to 2 and follows the pass into 2's spot; 2 passes to 3 and quickly moves into a defensive position; 3 passes to 4 and takes 4's place; 4 receives and immediately takes on 2 in a 1v1 battle to goal. If 4 doesn't score, 4 becomes the keeper; if 4 scores, the keeper stays.

    Coach says

Pass, then go take their spot. Last pass, you attack — beat the defender, beat the goalie. Miss, and you ARE the goalie.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Keep the balls feeding from cone 1 and the game continuing. Watch for a good passing combination, quick movement off the ball, and good defensive posture and positioning from the player stepping in to defend.

    Coach says

Move the second you pass! Defender, get set — shooter, take them on!

Look for: The shooter beating the defender with speed and getting a shot on target.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Feed the next ball as soon as the 1v1 resolves and let the game continue — the miss-and-you're-keeper rule keeps the goal changing hands on its own.

    Coach says

Next ball, go! Nobody wants goalie duty — shoot like you mean it!

If it's not working

If players are struggling in the one-v-one and shots aren't coming, cut the defender's effort to half speed — and if they still can't get a shot off, take the defender out entirely.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
The combination keeps everyone passing and moving off the ball, the finish is a real one vs. one to goal — and the fun, competitive twist that a missed shot makes you the goalkeeper is exactly the part the kids love.
What are they learning?
A passing combination with quick movement off the ball, good defensive posture and positioning, and beating a defender with speed to get a shot on target.
How can I change it?

Easier: Reduce the defender's role to 50% effort — or remove the defender entirely.
