Line Passing Combination Warm-up

Four players advance down the field as a connected line, passing and returning in a set pattern while holding their spacing all the way across.

Combination play while advancing up the field is all timing — the pass slightly leading a moving teammate — and it warms the whole group up on the way.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Four cones per group, and a ball for each group.
  2. Build: Start with four cones set along a sideline about 10 yards apart — one starting spot per player.
  3. Place: A player on each cone, with the ball starting on one of the far cones.

One thing to remember: Combination play while advancing up the field — the timing of passes and runs, crisp clean passes with the right amount of pace, leading a moving teammate, holding spacing, and communication.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

The ball works through the moving line in a set pattern — pass, return, on to the next player — while the group advances down the field holding its 10-yard spacing.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Put a player on each of the four cones and give the ball to a player on one of the far cones. If you have the numbers, start more groups along the line.

    Coach says

Four across, ten yards apart. End player — you've got the ball.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk the sequence — player 1 passes into player 2, who returns it to player 1. Player 1 passes to player 3, who returns the pass to player 2. Player 2 passes to player 4, who returns the pass to player 3. Player 3 passes back to player 4, who passes to player 2 — and the pattern repeats.

    Coach says

Short pass, give it back, then move it down the line. Know who you pass to and who passes to you.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Set the line moving straight down the field with the pattern running, and instruct the players to keep the same distance as much as possible the whole way. Keep the passes crisp and clean with the right amount of pace, slightly leading each player so they receive the ball as they advance, and keep them talking so each player is aware of the next move.

    Coach says

Hold your spacing! Lead them a little — hit them moving, not standing.

Look for: The lead — passes played slightly ahead so each player receives the ball while advancing down the field.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

When a group reaches the other side of the field, have them wait until all groups have completed — then repeat the pattern going back the other way. Run it a few times so the players warm up and get into a rhythm.

    Coach says

Everybody across? Back the other way — find that rhythm.

If it's not working

If the line bunches up or the pattern dies, freeze it and ask — how far apart should you be, and who's your next pass? Let them answer, then play on.

Why are we doing this?
Passing while the whole line advances makes timing the drill — every ball must slightly lead a moving teammate, every player must hold their spacing — which is combination play up the field, delivered as a warm-up rhythm.
What are they learning?
Combination play while advancing up the field — the timing of passes and runs, crisp clean passes with the right amount of pace, leading a moving teammate, holding spacing, and communication.
