3v1 Rotating Defenders
Three keep the ball inside the square while the defenders take turns — each new defender serves the ball in, then chases it.
Keeping the ball in a tight space is passing, decision making, movement, and talk all at once — and a fresh defender every round keeps the pressure honest.
Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive
- Grab: Cones, pinnies for the attackers, and a supply of balls to stack at the defenders' corner.
- Build: Build a square about 10-by-10 yards. Add more squares so nobody stands around.
- Place: Three attackers inside; three defenders in a line behind one corner cone with the balls.

One thing to remember: Pass quality — weight, pace, accuracy — runs off the ball, communication, and speed of decisions.
How it runs — the whole game in one sentence
The defender serves the ball in and chases it; the three attackers string passes until it is won or out; then the next defender serves and it starts again.
1Organize the players▾
Coach does
Groups of six — three attackers in pinnies inside the square, three defenders lined up behind a corner cone with the balls.
Coach says
Three inside, three in line at the corner. Defenders — you bring the ball in.
2Show the jobs▾
Coach does
Walk one round — the first defender passes in and immediately steps in to defend; the attackers pass until the ball is won or leaves the square; then the next defender serves into the same three.
Coach says
Defenders — pass it in, then go get it. Attackers — as many passes as you can.
3Play▾
Coach does
Keep the rounds rolling — the moment a ball dies, the next defender serves. Encourage playing in one or two touches.
Coach says
Passes to feet — talk to each other! One touch, two touch, quick!
Look for: The well-timed run facing the passing direction — a mover the passer can actually find.
4Switch and repeat▾
Coach does
Let the serves do the rotating — every dead ball brings the next defender in with a fresh ball, so the pressure never gets stale.
Coach says
Ball's dead — next defender, serve it in!
If it's not working
If the attackers can't string passes together, walk the square bigger — a larger square favors the attackers — then shrink it back once it flows.
Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.
Why are we doing this?
What are they learning?
How can I change it?
Easier: Make the square bigger — a larger square favors the attackers.
Harder: Shrink the square — smaller favors the defender.
Next: 3v1 Early Support — the same 3v1, now with a second square to escape to.
