Circle Passing Combination

Two balls run the same give-and-go pattern through the middle of a circle at once — pass out, take the return, play the neighbor, and the neighbor takes the middle.

With two balls moving at once, crisp passing, heads-up scanning, and communication stop being coaching points and become the only way the pattern survives.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones to mark the circle and a ball for each of the two central players.
  2. Build: Build a circle around the two central players, with the outside players about 5 to 7 yards from each other.
  3. Place: The team spread around the circle, the two central players in the middle, a soccer ball with each.
Show me the setup pictureA cone circle of outside players spaced 5 to 7 yards apart, with two central players in the middle, each holding a ball.

One thing to remember: Passing, communication, playing with speed, and playing to feet — crisp passes with good pace, heads up to find the open players, and holding a central position so you receive facing the ball.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

Both central players pass out, take the return, and immediately play the neighbor to the left or right — that receiver swaps into the middle and the pattern rolls on, two balls at once.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Set the circle with outside players about 5 to 7 yards from each other, and start two players in the middle with a ball each.

    Coach says

Make me a circle — a good few steps between you. Two in the middle, ball each.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk one pattern — both central players begin at the same time, passing to outside players on opposite sides of the circle. The outside player returns the pass; the central player keeps their central spot and immediately plays to the player left or right of the first one. That second receiver switches roles with the central player and continues the same pattern on the opposite side. Left or right is the players' call — read whether that player is being used by the other central player.

    Coach says

Pass out, get it back, play the neighbor — and neighbor, you're in the middle now!

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Run both patterns at once. Demand good crisp passes with good pace — not too soft, not too strong — and heads up scanning the field, with everyone communicating so two balls never get played to the same player. Start slow, and once they figure it out, ramp it up.

    Coach says

Crisp passes — talk to each other! Don't let both balls find the same player!

Look for: Heads up and scanning — players communicating so two balls never arrive at the same player.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

The middle switches itself with every pattern. Once it hums, change it up and do other passing combinations — let the kids be creative with their combination play.

    Coach says

You've got it — now invent your own combination. Show me something new!

If it's not working

If the pattern keeps breaking down, slow it back to a walk — let them figure it out at low speed, then ramp it up again.

Why are we doing this?
Two balls sharing one circle force real scanning and real communication, and the central players holding their spot until the switch keeps everyone playing facing the ball — get in too tight and there is no time to play it. An excellent warm-up to start a passing practice.
What are they learning?
Passing, communication, playing with speed, and playing to feet — crisp passes with good pace, heads up to find the open players, and holding a central position so you receive facing the ball.
