Diamond Passing Combination

A line of players passes into the diamond and overlaps the passer — the ball goes first time to the far passer and comes back to the overlapping runner, who feeds the next player.

Quick ball movement and combinations clean up first touch and tight passing — and the same pattern spread out becomes long-passing work.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones, red pinnies for your two passers, and balls.
  2. Build: Set up 4 cones in the shape of an elongated diamond — keep it tight to work first touch and tight passing, or spread it out to work on long passing.
  3. Place: An all-time passer on each of the two cones where the points of the diamond are closest, and everyone else in line with the balls.

One thing to remember: Quick ball movement and combination play — clean, crisp passing, first touch, overlapping after the pass, and movement off the ball timed with the pass.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

The first player passes to a passer and overlaps them; the ball goes first time to the other passer and back to the overlapping runner, who plays into the next in line the other way.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Put your two all-time passers in red on the two closest points of the diamond — you'll rotate them every 3 to 5 minutes — and line everyone else up with the balls.

    Coach says

Reds, you're the passers — stay put. Everyone else, one line, first player on a ball.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk the loop — the first player in line passes to one of the passers and overlaps them; that passer plays a first-time ball into the other passer, who returns it to the overlapping player; the player then plays into the next player in line, and the pattern repeats going the other direction.

    Coach says

Pass, then run around your passer — the ball meets you on the far side. Then feed the next player.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Keep it a continuous passing pattern and keep speeding up the combination play — clean, crisp passing, with movement off the ball timed to the pass.

    Coach says

Crisp and clean! Time your overlap — arrive as the ball does.

Look for: Movement timed with the pass — the overlap arriving exactly as the return is played.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Rotate the passers every 3 to 5 minutes so everyone runs the line. For harder rounds, play every pass one-touch, or expand the distance between the cones and play longer balls in the air.

    Coach says

New passers in! This round, one touch only.

If it's not working

If first touches keep getting away, pull the cones in while they play — tighten the diamond until the pattern flows, then stretch it back out for the long balls.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
One diamond holds two drills — kept tight it cleans up first touch and tight passing; spread out, the same combinations become long-passing work — and the continuous pattern keeps the ball moving quickly the whole time.
What are they learning?
Quick ball movement and combination play — clean, crisp passing, first touch, overlapping after the pass, and movement off the ball timed with the pass.
How can I change it?

Harder: Play every pass one-touch, or expand the distance between the cones and play longer balls in the air.
