Triangle Goal Game

Two teams attack the same three-sided goal in the middle of the grid, working together to off-balance the defense and catch the goalkeeper off guard.

One goal with three open sides puts every aspect of the game — passing, moving, defending, and finishing — into a single fight for the ball.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones, pinnies for one team, balls, and three practice sticks or flags.
  2. Build: Build a grid about 35 by 35 — sized up or down for your players' age and skill — with a triangle of sticks in the middle, about 5 yards on each side, serving as the goal.
  3. Place: A goalkeeper inside the triangle and two even teams — 4v4 or 5v5 — in the grid.

One thing to remember: All aspects of the game — passing, receiving, moving with and without the ball, defending, attacking, and finishing.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

Two teams fight for one ball and score on any of the triangle's three sides — under the top of the sticks — and after a goal the ball is live on the other side of the goal.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Split the group into two even teams of 4v4 or 5v5 and put the goalkeeper inside the triangle — defending all three sides at once.

    Coach says

One goal, three sides, and it belongs to nobody — you can score on any side of it.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk the rules — both teams attack the three-sided goal while the keeper defends all three sides. A goal counts only when the ball crosses through no higher than the top of the flag; a score is a point, and the ball is live on the other side of the goal. When the keeper makes a save, they distribute the ball into open space away from players.

    Coach says

Keep it under the top of the sticks. Score, and the ball's live behind the goal — keep playing!

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Let it run — passing, receiving, moving with and without the ball, defending, attacking, and finishing all show up at once. Push the teams to work together to quickly off-balance the defense and catch the goalkeeper off guard.

    Coach says

Swing it around — move them, then catch that keeper looking the wrong way!

Look for: Teams moving the ball together to off-balance the defense and finish on the side the keeper left open.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Keep score and keep it moving. For later rounds, only allow a shot on goal after a number of passes — the number is yours to set — or play in 1 or 2 touches.

    Coach says

New rule — count your passes; hit our number before anybody shoots!

If it's not working

If play turns to chaos or goes stale, slide the cones while they play — the 35-by-35 sizes up or down to match your players' age and skill.

Why are we doing this?
Attacking a goal that faces three directions means the only way to score is to work together as a team — quickly off-balancing the defense and catching the goalkeeper off guard — so all aspects of the game get exercised in one fight for the ball.
What are they learning?
All aspects of the game — passing, receiving, moving with and without the ball, defending, attacking, and finishing.
