1v1 Defending the Dribble

Attackers try to dribble through a small square guarded by one defender — beat them and play on, lose the ball and you take their place.

Isolating the defender one-on-one puts every rep on the first defender's real job — defending the dribble.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones, a ball, and pinnies in two colors — one color per team.
  2. Build: Build a 10-by-10-yard square, then set a starting cone 10 yards outside it on two opposite sides.
  3. Place: Line each team up on a starting cone, facing the middle. One defender starts inside the square; the first attacker starts with the ball.

One thing to remember: Defending the dribble as the first defender — Quick, Slow, Sideways, Low.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

One attacker at a time dribbles at the middle defender and tries to get out the far side — lose the ball, and you're the new defender.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Split into two teams with pinnies and line each up on its cone, facing the middle square. Put one defender inside.

    Coach says

Two lines, facing the square. One defender in the middle — first attacker, ball at your feet.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk one rep — the attacker tries to dribble through and out the far side, then passes to the first player in the line they're facing. Demonstrate the defender's approach — sprint to close, slow up, turn sideways, get low.

    Coach says

Attackers — dribble through and out the other side. Defenders — Quick, Slow, Sideways, Low.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Keep the pace fast. Whoever loses the ball becomes the defender; whoever wins it passes to a teammate in line, and that player attacks the new defender.

    Coach says

Go fast — attack them while they're off balance!

Look for: Defenders closing at a sprint, then slowing up sideways and low before they arrive.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

The switch is built in — every lost ball trades the defender. Keep the transitions moving so the middle never sits empty.

    Coach says

Lose it, you're in the middle — transition quick!

If it's not working

If defenders keep getting beaten, freeze it and ask them which one they skipped — Quick, Slow, Sideways, or Low — then play on.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
Isolating the duel puts all the attention on the first defender's craft — and because losing the ball makes you the next defender, the game brings its own pressure and its own quick transitions.
What are they learning?
Defending the dribble as the first defender — Quick, Slow, Sideways, Low.
How can I change it?

Easier: Shrink the square — the attacker has less room, and the defender's job gets simpler.

Harder: Widen the square — more room for the attacker to work with.

Next: 1v1 Defending the Dribble with Teammate — the same duel, now in pairs with a goal to finish on.
