Combination Shooting Rotation
A give-and-go, a layoff, and a timed run around the flag into a first-time shot — running from both corners at once, with everyone rotating one job forward.
Goals come after build-up — this drill works the small combination play that gets the shot off, and the timed run that buries it first time.
Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive
- Grab: Cones, practice sticks for the three flags, plenty of balls, and your two full-size goals.
- Build: Set the two goals facing each other about 30 yards apart; plant three flags across the middle — left, center, and right — and place a cone 5 yards past each outside flag.
- Place: A keeper in each goal, a player at each outside cone, two players at the center flag — one for each side of the drill — and everyone else at the opposite corners with a ball each.

One thing to remember: Combination play and build-up before getting the shot off — solid one-touch passes, timed movement and runs, layoffs set for the shooter, and shooting form with the body leaning forward through the ball and landing on the kicking foot.
How it runs — the whole game in one sentence
Player 1 plays into player 2, takes the return, and finds player 3, whose layoff meets player 2's timed run around the flag for a first-time shot on goal.
1Organize the players▾
Coach does
Put a keeper in each goal, a player at each of the outside cones, and two players at the center flag — one for each side of the drill. Everyone else starts at the opposite corners with a ball each, stationed as the diagram shows.
Coach says
Keepers in. One player on each wide cone, two at the middle flag — everybody else, corners, ball each. Watch the pattern once and you'll have it.
2Show the jobs▾
Coach does
Walk the pattern — player 1 plays a ball into player 2, who checks to the ball and plays it back. Player 1 then plays into player 3, and player 3 lays a ball off for player 2 — who has a timed run around the flag and shoots first time on goal.
Coach says
In, back, in, layoff — then around the flag and hit it first time. One shot, no settling.
3Play▾
Coach does
Keep both sides running and coach the details — good solid passes, played in one touch if possible; runs timed so nobody arrives too early or too late; the layoff simply set for a good one-touch shot; and shooting form, leaning forward through the ball and landing on the kicking foot.
Coach says
Time that run — don't beat the layoff there! Lean through it and land on your shooting foot!
Look for: The timed run — the shooter rounding the flag to meet the layoff in stride, arriving neither too early nor too late.
4Switch and repeat▾
Coach does
All players rotate forward one position — player 1 becomes player 2, player 2 becomes player 3, and player 3 shags the ball. For a later round, limit all passes and touches to one touch.
Coach says
Rotate up — shooter, go shag your ball! Next corner, play!
If it's not working
If shooters keep arriving early or late, freeze it and ask — when does your run around the flag start? Let them answer, then play on.
Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Harder: Limit all passes and touches to one touch.
