Passing to Beat the Defender

Two pairs play 2v2 in the middle while their teammates guard the end lines — score by slipping a knee-high pass past the pair defending the far line.

Beating a defender with a pass takes moving, finding open space behind the defense, and a ball played with real pace — this game asks for all three on every possession.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones, pinnies to split the teams, and a large supply of balls for yourself.
  2. Build: Build a grid approximately 25 by 30 yards.
  3. Place: Two players from each team in the middle of the grid, the other two on their assigned end line — and you on the outside with the ball supply.

One thing to remember: Passing to beat the defender — passing with pace and to space, moving to support the passer, keeping possession 2v2, and playing balls away from the end-line defenders.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

You play a ball in; the middle pairs go 2v2, and a team scores with a pass no higher than knee-high past the opponents guarding the far end line — score, and the pairs rotate.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Split the team into two teams of four. Two players from each team play in the middle of the grid; the other two defend their assigned end line. Take your spot outside with the ball supply.

    Coach says

Two teams of four — a pair in the middle, a pair on your line. End-liners, you slide side to side, but you never step in.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk the game — you play a ball in, the team that has it holds possession from the other team and plays 2v2. The end-line players can move side to side along their line but cannot enter the grid. To score, the team in possession must make a pass no higher than knee-high past the opponents defending the end line. Each score rotates the end-line defenders with the attackers.

    Coach says

I serve it, you keep it — and you score by slipping a low pass past their line. Knee-high or under, nothing over.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Keep the balls coming and coach the possession — players actually passing the ball rather than just kicking it, passes with good pace played to space, movement to help the passer keep possession, and balls played away from the end-line defenders.

    Coach says

Pass it, don't just kick it! Move — give your partner somewhere to go!

Look for: A real pass, not a kick — good pace, played to space, and aimed away from the end-line defenders.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

The rotation runs itself — every score swaps the end-line defenders with the attackers. For later rounds, increase the grid and play 3v3 with three end-line players.

    Coach says

Bigger field, three on three this time — same low pass to score!

If it's not working

If the middle pair can never keep the ball long enough to score, let the end-line players be passed to as outlets — extra help until possession holds.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
The knee-high rule means a score is a genuine pass — real pace, played to space, under knee height past the defenders — and 2v2 in the middle means constant moving to keep possession alive long enough to find it.
What are they learning?
Passing to beat the defender — passing with pace and to space, moving to support the passer, keeping possession 2v2, and playing balls away from the end-line defenders.
How can I change it?

Easier: Allow the end-line players to be passed to in order to maintain possession.

Harder: Require a certain number of passes — you pick the number — before attacking the end line.
