Receiving with Back to Goal

With a defender closing on their back, the attacker checks to the server's pass and chooses — turn and go 1v1 at the goal, or play it back and make it a 2v1.

A ball arriving with your back to the goal asks one question — turn, shield, or play the way you face — and this drill makes the answer come under real pressure.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones and a supply of balls.
  2. Build: Build a grid of approximately 20 by 30 yards with an 8-yard goal on the end line.
  3. Place: The server (player 1) at the top of the grid with the ball; the attacker (player 2) about 5 yards in front of the goal, facing the server; the defender (player 3) at the corner of the end line near the goal.

One thing to remember: Chest, thigh, and fast traps under pressure — checking in to the pass, and choosing to turn, shield, or play the way you face when your back is to the goal.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

The server plays into the attacker and the defender brings instant pressure — the attacker checks to the ball and picks, turn and beat them 1v1 for a shot or play it back and go 2v1.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Set the trio — server at the top of the grid with the ball, attacker about 5 yards in front of the goal facing the server, defender at the corner of the end line near the goal.

    Coach says

Server up top. You're in front of the goal, back to it. Defender — you come the second the ball moves.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk one rep — the server plays a ball into the attacker, and the defender immediately puts the attacker under pressure. The attacker must check in by moving toward the pass, then decide — turn and beat the defender 1v1 and take a shot on goal, or play the ball back to the server and play out the 2v1.

    Coach says

Come meet the ball — don't wait on it. Then it's your call: turn and take them on, or play it back and go two on one.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Run the reps and mix the serves so the traps come off the chest, the thigh, and fast off the feet. Watch the quality of the controlling touch — turn, shield, or pass back — quick control moving toward the goal, the first touch into space away from the advancing defender, and the pass-or-dribble decision.

    Coach says

Feel where they are — turn if you can, keep it safe if you can't!

Look for: The decision matching the pressure — turning when there's room, shielding or playing back when the defender is tight.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Rotate the trio so everyone serves, attacks, and defends. To grow it, introduce additional players — you pick how many and where.

    Coach says

Rotate — new attacker in front of the goal.

If it's not working

If the attacker turns into the defender every time, freeze it at the touch and ask what the pressure on their back was telling them — turn, shield, or play it back — then serve again.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
The pressure arrives with the pass, so checking to the ball and the first touch decide everything — a clean turn earns the 1v1 and the shot, and when the turn isn't on, playing the way you face keeps the ball and buys the 2v1.
What are they learning?
Chest, thigh, and fast traps under pressure — checking in to the pass, and choosing to turn, shield, or play the way you face when your back is to the goal.
How can I change it?

Harder: Introduce additional players.
