Hot-Box Passing and Receiving Drill

One working player in a tiny box takes a minute of check runs, turns around the sticks, and crisp passes between two side players — then rotates out to rest.

Small-group and individual passing and receiving, compressed — a minute at full pace of check runs, first touches, turns, and crisp passes in a 3-yard box.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones, practice sticks, and a ball per group.
  2. Build: Build a box about 3 yards by 3 yards, with a cone 5 to 7 yards out on either side of it.
  3. Place: One player starts in the box and the other two start at the cones on either side; the practice sticks stand as the diagram shows.
Show me the setup pictureA 3-by-3 box with practice sticks, a cone 5 to 7 yards out on each side with a player at each, and the working player in the middle.

One thing to remember: Small-group passing and receiving — a crisp first touch, fluid movement after the touch, crisp passes back, and side players who keep moving.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

A side player feeds the working player, who turns around a stick, passes between the sticks to the far side, and check-runs for the return — with a new player in the middle every minute.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Split into groups of three — one working player in the box, the other two at the cones on either side with the ball.

    Coach says

Threes — one of you in the hot box, partners at the cones on each side. Middle player, you're working.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk the pattern — a side player passes in as the working player check-runs to the ball; the working player receives, turns around the practice stick back into the middle of the box, and passes between the sticks to the player on the opposite side; then check-runs outside the box toward the player they just passed to, takes the return in the middle, turns around a different stick, and plays to the other side. The pattern repeats.

    Coach says

Check to the ball, turn around the stick, pass it through. Then check outside, take it back, and go around a different stick the other way.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Keep the working player at full pace and hold the side players to a standard too — they need to be moving, not simply standing around. Watch for the crisp first touch, good fluid movement after it, and a crisp pass back.

    Coach says

Crisp touch, crisp pass! Side players — stay on the move, no statues!

Look for: The first touch — crisp, with good fluid movement right after it and a crisp pass back to the side players.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Switch the working player every 1 minute, so everyone gets time to work at full pace and time to rest. To step it up, tighten the grid and limit the touches to receive and turn.

    Coach says

One minute — switch! New player in the box.

If it's not working

If the pattern keeps breaking down, make the area larger while they work — then tighten it back up as the touches sharpen.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
A minute in the hot box packs check runs, turns, and passes into a tiny space at full pace — small-group and individual passing and receiving with the rest built into the rotation.
What are they learning?
Small-group passing and receiving — a crisp first touch, fluid movement after the touch, crisp passes back, and side players who keep moving.
How can I change it?

Easier: Make the area larger.

Harder: Tighten the grid and limit the number of touches to receive and turn.
