3v1 - Attacking the Goal

One attacker from each of three lines plays quick passes at a lone defender and keeper, hunting the moment to finish — and the defender rotates every few attacks.

Composure in front of the goal comes from being there — quick, accurate passes that off-balance the defender and keeper until the finish opens up.

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: Cones, pinnies for the defenders, plenty of balls, and your full-size goal.
  2. Build: Nothing to build — the goal is the field. Set three lines' worth of starting spots about 20 to 25 yards out, left, center, and right.
  3. Place: A keeper in the goal, your 2 to 3 designated defenders in red ready to rotate one at a time, and the ball starting with the center line.

One thing to remember: Attacking movement and composure in front of the goal — quick passes to feet, finding back-side players to off-balance the defense, swinging the play when in trouble, and recognizing situational play.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

The center player starts the ball and three attackers play 3v1 at the defender and keeper, passing quick and accurate until the shot comes — defenders rotate every 2 to 3 attacks.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Make three lines — left, center, right — about 20 to 25 yards from goal, designate your 2 to 3 rotating defenders in red, and put the keeper in. The ball starts with the center line.

    Coach says

Three lines — left, middle, right. Middle, you've got the ball. One defender's coming for you.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

Walk one attack — the center player starts with the ball, one player from each line steps out, and the three attack the defender together with quick, accurate passes to off-balance the defender and keeper and score. The outside attackers try to draw the defender and keeper toward them, then slide the ball backside to the open player — and anyone in trouble knocks it back to the center player to swing the play the other way.

    Coach says

Quick passes, right to feet. Outside players — pull them to you, then slide it backside. In trouble? Knock it back and swing it.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Keep the attacks quick — if the play is too slow, the ball is considered dead and the next group begins. Rotate the defenders after every 2 to 3 attacks.

    Coach says

Play quick — a slow ball is a dead ball! Next three, be ready!

Look for: The backside pass — outside attackers drawing the defender and keeper in, then sliding the ball across to the open player.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Keep the groups cycling and the defenders rotating so everyone attacks. For later rounds, limit the attackers to one or two touches, or add a second defender.

    Coach says

Next round — two touches, that's it. Make them count.

If it's not working

If the attacks crawl, call it — too slow means a dead ball, and the next group begins.

Why are we doing this?
Three against one in front of the goal makes patience and quickness the same skill — the passes must be fast and to feet, but the finish waits for the backside player to come open — and rotating the defender every few attacks keeps the reps rolling.
What are they learning?
Attacking movement and composure in front of the goal — quick passes to feet, finding back-side players to off-balance the defense, swinging the play when in trouble, and recognizing situational play.
How can I change it?

Harder: Limit the attackers to one or two touches, or add a second defender.
