4v5 Goal Guard
Four defenders protect a real goal against five attackers — outnumbered on purpose, so getting in front of the ball is the only thing that works.
Stopping goals from the middle means someone gets between the ball and the goal every time — this drill makes that job impossible to skip.
Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive
- Grab: Cones, pinnies in two colors, a supply of balls.
- Build: Mark a 40-by-28-yard field with a regular goal at each end.
- Place: Four defenders in one color, five attackers in the other, spare balls at the sidelines for fast restarts.
One thing to remember: Close the opening, deny the shot, and double-team the moment the opening is shut.
How it runs — the whole game in one sentence
The five attack, the four deny every shot from the middle — when the ball crosses a sideline, the attacking team restarts immediately by passing or dribbling in the closest ball.
1Organize the players▾
Coach does
Set the tight field, put the four defenders in, and spread spare balls down the sidelines so restarts take seconds.
Coach says
Four of you are the wall. Five attack. Ball goes out — grab the closest one and play on.
2Show the jobs▾
Coach does
Walk one attack — the closest defender steps between the ball and the goal, and the moment the others see that, they get behind the ball to double-team or steal.
Coach says
Closest defender: get between the ball and the goal. Everyone else: see it, then get behind the ball and help.
3Play▾
Coach does
Run 3-minute rounds with 30 seconds between, subbing every round. At a break, ask what a defender does when an attacker faces the goal in shooting range — then let them show you.
Coach says
Close the opening, deny the shot. Work together to keep it closed.
Look for: The nearest defender stepping in front of the ball BEFORE the shot — not lunging after it leaves.
4Switch and repeat▾
Coach does
Rotate defenders on every sub so all nine take turns being the outnumbered wall. Switch variants when the level is wrong.
Coach says
New wall! Next four in — attackers, keep coming at them.
If it's not working
Too hard? Go 3v3 on two 36-yard squares where blocking a shot scores a point. Too easy? 5v6 on a half field with a regular goal and two counter goals.
Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.
Why are we doing this?
What are they learning?
How can I change it?
Easier: 3v3 in two 36-by-36 fields — a point for every blocked shot.
Harder: 5v6 in a half field with a regular goal and two counter goals.
Next: In the closing game, watch for defenders protecting the goal without being asked — that is the transfer you want on Saturday.
