Knockout

Everyone dribbles in a box, everyone hunts — keep your ball in and knock theirs out.

Close control under pressure, disguised as a fight — and it never ages out; the professionals play it.

U11–U12Any number5 min1 ball per player, 4 cones

Set up · 3 actions · before the kids arrive

  1. Grab: A ball per player and four cones.
  2. Build: Mark a box with the four cones.
  3. Place: Everyone inside the box, each with their own ball at their feet.

One thing to remember: Close control, shielding, and scanning — under real pressure.

How it runs — the whole game in one sentence

Protect your ball, knock everyone else's out of the box — last player still dribbling wins.

  1. 1Organize the players

    Coach does

Everyone in the box with a ball at their feet.

    Coach says

In the box. Ball at your feet.

  2. 2Show the jobs

    Coach does

State both jobs — they happen at once, and that is the game.

    Coach says

Keep yours in. Knock theirs out. Ball leaves the box, you're out. Last one dribbling wins.

  3. 3Play

    Coach does

Watch for hiders in the corners — the game only works if everyone hunts.

    Coach says

    Go hunting! Protect it!

Look for: Heads up — eyes scanning for targets while the ball stays in close control.

  4. 4Switch and repeat

    Coach does

Keep rounds short and restart fast, so nobody who is out stands around long.

    Coach says

Winner! Everybody back in — round two.

If it's not working

Shrink the box while they play — smaller space, more collisions between the two jobs.

Want to go deeper? Optional — not needed to run the game.

Why are we doing this?
The source's own point is that it never ages out — "that just becomes more competitive as they get better and older. The professionals play those games." Attack and protect in the same breath is the whole skill of dribbling in traffic.
What are they learning?
Close control, shielding, and scanning — under real pressure.
How can I change it?

Easier: Bigger box, so protecting is easier than hunting.

Harder: Smaller box, or weak foot only.
